Fusion Freeze 3

Fusion Breeze/ Freeze was founded in 2015 by Teuta to promote tribal and fusion bellydance in Belgium, and to give dancers of all levels a stage to shine on. Connecting Tribal fusion belly dancers and dance lovers of all ages, nationalities and levels, encouraging diversity and building bridges between different cultures and countries, the Fusion Breeze / Freeze Festival has become a crossroad where national and international dancers, dance lovers, teachers, choreographers and troupes are gathered twice a year . The festival aims to be a cozy, friendly and personal place where everyone feels welcome and knows each others name. Next to connecting dancers, the festival strives to give dancers more body awareness, by programming different movement and bodywork workshops, like yoga and massage workshops.

This year it's time for the thrid edition of Fusion Freeze. This year we have a very special guest for you coming all the way from Italy, Caterina Grimani, who will be at the festival teaching workshops and performing solo and with her dance troupe. We also have a very special yoga side program brought to you by Katherine Walker. Not your regular yoga classes, but workshops which are specifically geared towards tribal fusion bellydancers. Next to the workshops we also have a wonderful show on Saturday evening and a Dinner Show on Sunday evening. So a full program this year. Don't miss out!

Caterina Grimani (IT)

Caterina Grimani is  one of the greatest exponents of tribal fusion in Italy. She is  dancer, teacher and choreographer at Asd Zambramora (Ancona) and in the international arena. She performs all over Italy and abroad and is well known and appreciated because of her sensitive, creative and innovative style. Since 2013 she is a member of “The Uzumé Dance Company” (NL), founded and directed by Tjarda Van Straten. In 2015 she founded “Kahuna Dance Company“, a fusion bellydance based company with an extremely emotive value.

Her passion for the Orient has led her to classical Bellydance, and almost simultaneously, to American Tribal Style (ATS) and Improvisational Tribal Style (ITS) of Amy Sigil, in which she is a level 1 and level 2 Certified Teacher. She is level 1 and 2 certified in the Suhaila Salimpour method. And she has studied Gothic style with Morgana and Lucia Wegner. Next to bellydance classes, she takes classes in Theatre and Dance: Hip Hop, Popping, Contemporary and Flamenco. She also attends in professional paths of Tribal Fusion, ITS, ATS intensives and workshops with many renowned artists: Sera Solstice, Rachel Brice, Fat Chance Bellydance, Ariellah Haflalo, Mardi Love, Kami Liddle, Mira Betz and many more.

Katherine Walker (BE)

Katherine is an experienced yoga teacher and Nutritionist (MSc) with over 300 hours training, and over 10 years experience teaching. In Belgium since 2010, she teaches workshops, retreats, private and public classes abroad and in Gent at Studio Groene Vallei, Yoga-On-Call, and Shambho. She is a co-organizer of the first yoga festival in Belgium, YogaLand , she is a teacher for online platforms such as YogametEvy.com, and NavaNadiStudios.com.

Tribal Fusion Bellydance was an inspiration when in 2006 she met her teacher Gwyn Ross of Bodhicitta in her hometown of Nashville, TN. She has participated in workshops from Indigo Girls - Rachel Brice, Mardi Love and Zoe Jakes... Katherine still uses the training techniques and concepts she learned in bellydance conditioning in her yoga classes.

We are proud to be offering you a carefully selected workshop programm. The graceful Caterina Grimani will be teaching 4 workshops in 4 totally different topics, a wonderful addition to your tribal fusion toolkit. And we also have an amazing yoga side programm brought to you by the wonderful Katherine Walker, specifically geared to bellydancers.

Workshops Saturday December 9

Workshop 1
Minimalist: Mobility through Immobility
Teacher: Caterina Grimani
Saturday December 9th | 11.30 - 14.00

As tribal fusion bellydancers we sometimes have the tendency to show off all we can do at once. On stage, during an improv, or even in class, we often feel the need to overact, losing perception of our body and our movement. This can result in unclean, unprecise movement and a blurred focus. Sometimes it might be better to go for a slightly more minimalist approach. This is exactly what we will work on in this workshop: micro movement, reduced use of space, cleaning, order, precision, technique and listening skills. Let's go back to the essentials: simple, clean and with an eye for detail.

Workshop 2
1000 ways: Bye bye bellydance comfortzone
Teacher: Caterina Grimani
Saturday December 9th | 14.30 - 17.00

Circles, undulations, squares, slides, eights... Basic technique is the same for everybody. But it's the execution that makes the difference: there are over 1000 ways to show the same movement. In this class we will say goodbye to our comfortzone and look at our movements in an unusual manner: focussing on body, time, space and power, we will decompose and recompose our movement vocabulary. We will finish this class with a combo that entails all the work we did.

Workshop 3
Yoga Bellywork: Uddhiyana Banda and Pranayama in Bellydance
Teacher: Katherine Walker
Saturday December 9th | 17.00 - 18.30

Ancient techniques from the yoga tradition such as : Uddihiyana Banda can help Bellydancers to strengthen the abdomen, think nice belly rolls!
Pranayama techinques such as breath of fire, and ujjayi breath can condition the respiratory system to help keep energy up during a
performance! This class is a workshop-style class, not a vinysasa flow, be prepared to learn techniques to assist you in endurance and strength.

Workshops Sunday December 10

Workshop 4
The Dark side of the Water: Opposites Attract
Teacher: Caterina Grimani
Sunday December 10th | 11.00 - 13.30

Inspired by her studies of Chinese Medicine and of the 5 elements (water, wood, fire, earth and metal), Caterina has developed a unique workshop that focuses on the movement qualities of the water. As dancers we are often inspired by water for its fluid and feminine quality. But we sometimes overlook the other quality of water: the dark and cold side. This is the starting point for this workshop in which we will experiment with these 2 opposites. We will work on physiological, physical and emotional aspects, through technical and theatrical exercices and a choreography.

Workshop 5
Pose & Play: A Taste of Urban
Teacher: Caterina Grimani
Sunday December 10th | 14.00 - 16.30

Immerse yourself in Caterina's Universe and add some urban flavour to your bellydance. Caterina is well known for her urban fusion work, and will share her insights with us in this workshop. Focus is on the different ways we can use our muscles and thus our bodies. Internal versus External. Explosive (popping, hitting and tutting) versus Soft (waving). Quick versus Slow. And Steady versus Dynamic. There will be some intricate layering work in this class and we will end with a maxi combo.

Workshop 6
Lower Back Love
Teacher: Katherine Walker
Sunday December 10th | 16.30 - 18.00

Strengthening the abdominal wall - or the "corset" muscles are essential to keeping the lower back healthy. Bellydance movements often require a wide
range of motion from the pelvis which can irritate and sometimes inflame the lower back and sacrum. This class is a vinyasa flow class incorporating
core work, covering a range of abdominal exercises as well as specific stretches to both support and decompress the lower back.

Workshop registration is NOW open!

Without volunteers the festival wouldn't be the same. We always need enthusiastic volunteers that can help us during the weekend: From helping with setting up chairs and stage for the show, to filming the event. From photography to sound and light. From presenting the show to helping with vending or production. It's all possible. We appreciate all the help we get from volunteers. As a thank you, we can offer free entrance to the show. And of course a lot of fun! Want to volunteer? Then send an email to info@teuta.nl with a short motivation.

Ghent is a beautiful city, and if you are visitingthe festival you might want to consider booking an extra day to see all the ancient beauty this city has to offer. If you are looking for an accommodation, here are some suggestions. The closest accommodation to the event venue is B&B A Place to Be. There are 2 hostels within 20 minute walking distance from the venue: Hostel 47 and KaBa Hostel. Ghent has a quite active couchsurfing community and there are some beautiful AirBNB's to be found in or near the city. Want to meet some new dancer friends? Then post in the Fuson Freeze facebook event to see if there are any dancers in Ghent offering accommodation.
